What type of wood do you use for your furniture? Where does this wood come from?
Each piece of Jess Crate furniture is hand-crafted from solid southern yellow pine. Renewable and eco-friendly:
Our southern yellow pine comes from the fine forests of North Carolina. More trees are planted than are harvested each year here, which creates resources for future generations, while managing for multiple uses, such as wildlife and recreation.
All of our stain and lacquer finishes are completely water based and have no harmful effects on the environment both outside and, more importantly, inside of your home or living space!

What is solid southern yellow pine?
From Texas to Virginia, Southern Pine is the wood species of choice for many building, remodeling and do-it-yourself projects. Southern Pine forests cover much of the Southeastern United States. There are four main species of Southern Pine trees: shortleaf, longleaf, loblolly and slash. All Southern Pine wood is classified as softwood.
But don’t let that classification fool you! Southern Pine is anything but “soft.” For centuries Southern Pine has remained the building material of choice because it is such a strong and durable product. In fact, studies prove that Southern Pine lumber is the strongest softwood species available. Because it is such a dense wood, Southern Pine holds onto nails and other fasteners better than most other softwoods and reduces the likelihood of unsightly “nail pops.”
Southern Pine products are very economical – especially when compared to the alternatives. Southern Pine can be purchased as "clear wood," meaning it is in its natural state, or as "treated wood." Treated Southern Pine is injected with family and pet-safe preservatives which enable it to withstand decay, rot and termites. Upwards of 85 percent of all treated wood nationwide is Southern Pine. Why? The structure of the wood itself allows it to accept paint, stain or preservative treatment better than any other species. Treated Southern Pine wood will resist pests and decay better than any other species or composite material – and it will look better doing it!
Southern Pine is the premium wood choice for any project in or around your home: from a new pressure treated Southern Pine deck to interior heart pine flooring, a gorgeous front porch or pine paneling; from decorative Southern Pine moulding to the very frame of your home. And you can rest easy knowing your choice will not affect our country's beautiful forest lands. Our Southern Pine forests are abundant and thriving, and more trees are planted each year than are harvested.

PRODUCT CARE?
What is the best way to care for my Jess Crate furniture?
- WOOD BREATHES, EXPANDS AND CONTRACTS. Each piece of furniture responds differently to changes in temperature and humidity in your home. Expansion at the joints and seams will return to its original shape and size as seasons change.
- PROTECTIVE COVERINGS such as felt backed place mats and table pads will help protect the finish on your furniture. This is especially important for wood furniture that is used in kitchen areas.
- POLISH WOOD 2-3 times per year with Furniture Wood Polish. Dust with a soft lint-free cloth.
- TREAT DRAWER GLIDES with Vaseline or candle wax for smooth operation.
- AVOID LEANING CHAIRS back on two legs - to protect structural integrity and your personal safety.
- NEVER MOVE a bed while it is set-up. Always remove bedding and disconnect side rails to avoid structural damage.
- KEEP FURNITURE OUT OF SUNLIGHT to avoid sun damage and bleaching.
- KEEP FURNITURE AWAY FROM HEATING/AIR CONDITIONING SOURCES as they affect the moisture content of the wood.
- DO NOT SET SYNTHETICS, RUBBER OR PLASTICS on the wood finish as the chemicals may damage the finish.
- DO NOT LEAVE NEWSPAPERS and magazines on wood because the inks can bleed onto the finish and into the wood.
- PERIODICALLY ADJUST levelers and door hinges to ensure smooth operation of doors and drawers.
|
|
Expectations
- Because each piece of wood is unique, you can expect variations in grain appearance and stain coloration.
- Random distressing applied by hand adds a distinctive heirloom appearance to the finish of some pieces. Ask your Sales Consultant if your furniture has this feature.
- Many wood pieces include levelers and door hinges that must be periodically adjusted to ensure smooth operation of doors and drawers.

What is a Water-based lacquer?
Due to health risks and environmental considerations involved in the use of solvent-based lacquers, much work has gone in to the development of water-based lacquers. Such lacquers are considerably less toxic and more environmentally friendly, and in many cases, produce acceptable results. More and more water-based coloured lacquers are replacing solvent-based clear and coloured lacquers in underhood and interior applications in the automobile and other similar industrial applications. Water based lacquers are used extensively in wood furniture finishing as well.
